Gansu in September: The Photographer's Month — Clear Skies and Golden Light
September competes with May for the title of best month in Gansu. The summer heat breaks. The sky is impossibly clear. The light turns golden and stays that way for hours. Kids are back in school, so domestic crowds drop. Harvest season fills the markets. For photography, there is no better month.
What to expect this month
Gansu in September: The Photographer's Month — Clear Skies and Golden Light
September and May are the two months I recommend without reservation. If May is the best month for first-timers who want green landscapes and comfortable warmth, September is the best month for photographers, repeat visitors, and anyone who prioritizes light quality and crowd-free experiences. The province is still lush from summer but the heat has broken, the air is cleaner, and the golden hour stretches into a golden afternoon.
September weather perfection
Hexi Corridor: daytime 22-28°C — warm enough for short sleeves, cool enough for full-day outdoor activity. Nighttime 10-15°C. The humidity is low, the sky is clear, and the light is the best it will be all year.
Xiahe and Gannan: daytime 15-22°C, nighttime 3-8°C. The grasslands begin turning gold in mid-September. It is a different beauty from summer green — more painterly, more subtle — and many photographers prefer it.
Rain is rare. Sandstorms are essentially nonexistent. The weather is about as stable and predictable as Gansu ever gets.
Why photographers love September
The light. Low humidity means less atmospheric haze. The lower sun angle compared to summer means longer shadows and more dimensional landscapes. The golden hour starts earlier and lasts longer. Landscape shots that look flat in July look three-dimensional in September.
Harvest season adds visual interest. Markets are full of colorful produce. Grapes, melons, dates, and walnuts are everywhere. The food photography opportunities rival the landscape ones.
The late-month color change. By late September, the first autumn colors appear in the poplar and willow trees around Dunhuang and Lanzhou. It is the beginning of the autumn color window that peaks in October.
September strategy
Any route works in September. The Hexi Corridor is comfortable. Southern Gansu is still accessible and beautiful. You can design the trip around your interests rather than around weather limitations.
Book Mogao tickets still — September is popular with international travelers and Chinese retirees. It is not July-level pressure, but do not assume last-minute availability.
Consider adding Jinta (poplar forest near Jiayuguan) in late September. The color change starts here, and it is less crowded than the October peak.
