Gansu in November: The Last Call Before Winter

November is the last month of reasonable travel before winter. The first half can still deliver beautiful late-autumn days. The second half gets cold, and some services begin to close. It is quiet, cheap, and starkly beautiful — for travelers who do not mind the cold.

What to expect this month

Gansu in November: The Last Call Before Winter

November is the month where Gansu starts to say goodbye to the travel season. The first two weeks can still be lovely — cold mornings, clear days, almost no other visitors. By late November, winter is arriving in earnest: temperatures drop, some hotels close, and the high-altitude south becomes inaccessible. But for the traveler who prefers solitude and stark beauty over comfort and crowds, November has a quiet magic.

1

November conditions

First half: daytime 8-15°C in the Hexi Corridor, nights around freezing. Clear days are still common. The last autumn color lingers in early November. This is still a functional travel window with proper clothing.

Second half: daytime 2-8°C, nights -5°C to -10°C. Winter conditions begin. Some smaller Dunhuang hotels close for the season. Southern Gansu above 2,500m becomes largely inaccessible.

Lanzhou holds up better than the desert cities. The urban infrastructure — heated hotels, indoor restaurants, museums — makes it the most November-friendly base in the province.

2

November strategy

Stick to the Hexi Corridor cities. Skip Xiahe and Gannan entirely — they are either closed or so cold that the experience is diminished.

Go in the first half if possible. The difference between November 5 and November 25 is significant in terms of temperature, daylight, and service availability.

Lanzhou makes an excellent November base. The food scene is indoors, the museum is world-class, and the city is functional year-round. A Lanzhou-focused November trip with one corridor stop (Zhangye or Dunhuang) is a strong winter-adjacent route.

Prices are near their annual low. Hotels that stay open offer deep discounts. Sites are nearly empty. If solitude matters more to you than warmth, November delivers.
