Gansu in May: The Best Month for Most Travelers
May is, for most travelers, the best single month to visit Gansu. The weather is warm but not hot. The grasslands are greening. The sky is clear. Avoid the Labor Day holiday (May 1-5), and you get close to perfect travel conditions.
What to expect this month
Gansu in May: The Best Month for Most Travelers
If I could only recommend one month for a first Gansu trip, it would be May. Specifically, the middle two weeks — May 8 through May 22 or so. The Labor Day crush has passed. The summer heat has not arrived. The light is clear. The grasslands around Xiahe are turning green. Everything is open and operating at full hours. It is as close to ideal as Gansu travel gets.
May weather at a glance
Lanzhou: daytime 20-28°C, nighttime 10-15°C. Warm, comfortable, and the smog is usually less severe than winter. The riverfront is at its best.
Hexi Corridor (Zhangye, Jiayuguan, Dunhuang): daytime 22-30°C, nighttime 8-14°C. Warm but not scorching. The dry heat is pleasant rather than punishing. Perfect for long outdoor days.
Xiahe and Gannan: daytime 15-22°C, nighttime 2-8°C. Cool and comfortable at altitude. The grasslands start greening in mid-May. Wildflowers begin to appear. This is the earliest month where Xiahe feels fully welcoming.
Rain is rare but possible, especially in southern Gansu. It is rarely heavy enough to disrupt plans.
The Labor Day problem and solution
May 1-5 is the Labor Day national holiday, and it is one of the busiest travel periods in China. Gansu is less affected than places like Beijing or Xi'an, but Dunhuang and Zhangye still see significant domestic crowds. Hotels spike in price. Mogao tickets sell out further ahead than usual.
The solution is simple: avoid May 1-5. Start your trip on May 6 or later. The day after the holiday ends, the province empties out. You go from peak domestic tourism to one of the quietest windows of the year in 24 hours.
If you must travel during the holiday window, book everything — hotels, trains, Mogao tickets — at least a month ahead. And mentally prepare for crowds at the major viewpoints.
Why May works so well
All regions are accessible. The Hexi Corridor is warm. Southern Gansu is open and greening. You can design a route that covers the full province without weather limiting your options.
The light. May has the best combination of clear air, low humidity, and long golden hours of any month. Landscape photography is at its peak.
Comfortable temperatures for active travel. You can hike, walk between sites, and spend full days outdoors without the July-August heat dictating your schedule.
