Gansu in June: Summer Begins, Crowds Are Still Manageable

June is the most underrated summer month. The weather is warm and stable. The grasslands are lush. School holidays have not started nationwide, so domestic crowds are still manageable. If July-August is your only other summer option, June is the better choice.

What to expect this month

Gansu in June: Summer Begins, Crowds Are Still Manageable

June is what July and August wish they were. The weather is essentially the same — warm, stable, long daylight — but without the full force of domestic summer tourism. Chinese schools do not break for summer until July, so the family travel wave has not hit yet. The Hexi Corridor is hot but not at peak intensity. Southern Gansu is at its greenest. If summer is your only travel window, push for June.

June conditions

Hexi Corridor: daytime 28-35°C, nighttime 15-20°C. Hot but dry. Mornings and evenings are comfortable. Midday is best spent indoors or in transit.

Xiahe and Gannan: daytime 18-25°C, nighttime 5-12°C. Close to perfect. The grasslands are fully green. Wildflowers are blooming. This is one of the best months for southern Gansu.

Rain: more frequent than May, especially in the mountains. Usually brief afternoon showers. Rarely disruptive but worth having a light rain jacket.

Daylight: the longest days of the year. Sunrise around 5:50 AM, sunset after 8 PM. You can fit two full activity sessions into one day.

June strategy

Structure days around temperature: early morning outdoor sites, midday rest or transit, late afternoon second session. The long daylight makes this easy.

Spend more time in southern Gansu. Xiahe, the grasslands, and the Gannan region are at their best in June. This is the right month for a route that weights the Tibetan sections heavily.

Book Mogao tickets ahead. June is not as pressured as July-August, but it is popular enough that last-minute tickets are not guaranteed.
