Gansu in August: The Last Summer Month — Hot, Green, and Still Busy

August is July's slightly milder twin. The heat persists. The crowds persist through mid-month. But by late August, the first signs of autumn appear, and the travel pressure starts to ease. The grasslands remain beautiful. It is the last month of full summer access before the September transition.

What to expect this month

Gansu in August: The Last Summer Month — Hot, Green, and Still Busy

August is the month where summer starts to feel long. The heat in the Hexi Corridor is still real. The crowds are still present through the first three weeks. But the light is shifting — the sun sets a little earlier, the mornings feel a little fresher — and by the last week of August, you can feel autumn waiting. For travelers who cannot make June or September work, August is a perfectly viable window, especially if you lean into the highland sections.

1

August conditions

Similar to July but with a slight easing. Daytime highs still reach 32-37°C in the Hexi Corridor. Nights are warm. Rain is slightly more likely than July, especially in southern Gansu, but still generally brief.

The grasslands around Xiahe remain lush and green through August. Wildflowers continue through mid-month. This is still an excellent time for southern Gansu.

Crowds begin to thin in the last week of August as Chinese families prepare for the new school year (September 1). The difference between August 15 and August 25 can be noticeable at major sites.

2

August advantage: the late-month window

The last 7-10 days of August are one of the best summer windows because domestic family travel drops sharply. Kids are preparing for school. Parents are back at work. The tourist infrastructure is all still running at full summer capacity, but with fewer people using it.

If your schedule allows, aim for August 22-31. You get summer weather, summer greenery, and reduced crowds — the best of all worlds.

3

August strategy

Same heat management as July: early starts, midday rest, evening sessions. Southern Gansu for temperature relief.

Late August deserves its own strategy: if you can time the trip for the final week, you essentially get September conditions with August greenery.

Continue to book Mogao and key trains ahead, especially in the first three weeks.
