Gansu in April: The Month Everything Starts to Change

April is the bridge month. The first half can still feel like late winter with sandstorm risk. The second half is when Gansu starts to shine: blossoms appear, temperatures settle into comfortable range, and the sites are open but not yet crowded. Late April is one of the most underrated travel windows in the province.

What to expect this month

Gansu in April: The Month Everything Starts to Change

April is when I start saying yes to Gansu without a long list of caveats. The first two weeks are still uneven — you might get a sandstorm, you might get a cold snap. But from mid-April onward, the province shifts into a genuinely pleasant travel window. The blossoms come out around Dunhuang. The riverfront in Lanzhou fills with life. And the summer crowds have not arrived yet.

1

Weather and what to expect

Lanzhou: daytime 15-22°C, nighttime 5-10°C. The city comes alive. Outdoor dining returns. The riverfront is full of locals flying kites and drinking tea. This is when Lanzhou starts to feel like a real city rather than a transit point.

Hexi Corridor: daytime 12-20°C, nighttime 0-8°C. Sandstorm risk drops sharply after mid-month. Clear days become more common. The desert light in late April is golden and beautiful.

Xiahe: still cold at night (below freezing possible). The grasslands are not green yet. April is the earliest month I would consider for Xiahe, and only in the second half. Even then, pack warm layers.

Sandstorm risk: still present in early April, but the frequency and intensity drop as the month progresses. By late April, they are uncommon.

Why late April is a sweet spot

The apricot and pear blossoms around Dunhuang and Lanzhou peak in mid-to-late April. It is a brief, beautiful window that adds a softness the desert landscapes rarely show.

Tourist numbers are still low. The Labor Day holiday (May 1-5) has not started yet. You get spring conditions without spring crowds.

All major sites are open with normal hours. No winter reductions. No summer queues. Just normal, functional travel conditions.

April planning notes

The second half of April is significantly better than the first half. If you have flexibility, aim for April 15-30.

Pack layers. April temperature swings are among the widest of the year. A 22°C afternoon can drop to 5°C by evening.

Book Mogao tickets if your dates include the last few days of April — the Labor Day booking pressure starts early.
